A TASTE OF KERALA HAS COME TO BALHAM Reviewed by: Fay Maschler, Evening Standard 19 April 2006
Balham, described by Peter Sellers as Gateway to the South, is a fitting district for a Keralan restaurant. I was attracted to Sadya by the promise of authentic southern Indian cooking and gentle prices.
On an unseasonably cold evening we would have appreciated a bit more warmth in the restaurant, but the dignified welcome and service from a chap I took to be the owner made up for one of us never getting round to taking her coat off.
Sadya's chefs are award-winning, but it takes them a tremendously long time to get the first courses out. We drank more of a surprisingly good Chablis than we meant to while diddling around with poppadums and chutneys and awaiting the arrival of Cochin salad, masala dosa, chilly idli and cashew nut pakora.

Coconut is a staple in the Keralan diet and our meal reminded us of this rather too forcefully - starting with the Cochin salad of sliced root vegetables, which was dredged with coconut flakes.
If you have never tried a masala dosa - a crisp rice-and-lentil-flour pancake wrapped around spiced potatoes - it always arrives as an agreeable revelation, as it did to my friend and GP, Pete.
Chilly idli, which sounded like a good way of livening up the steamed rice and gram flour cakes, didn't quite come off. It was as if a bottled sweet-and-sour chilli sauce had been sloshed on. Cashew nuts fried in batter were nice, if probably rather heart-stopping. GP Pete ate a lot of them.
In the main course I liked the dryness and intensity of lamb porichathu garnished with crisply fried onions. The suggested accompaniment of a Keralan paratha (layered bread) was sound, as was the notion of eating a mild prawn curry similar to a molee with appams - bowl-shaped pancakes, crisp at the edges, soft at the centre, made from leavened rice flour batter and the inevitable coconut milk.
Dishes of the day displayed on a blackboard demonstrate an unusually interested approach to the cooking. If I lived nearer Balham, I might go back, especially as many main courses are only about £4.50 each.

Comments by our valuable customers:

The word "gem" has been used, and that is exactly what it is. Charming staff, very welcoming atmosphere. The South Indian (Kerala) dishes are sublime - you must try Ulli Theyal and Mango Pachadi. This restaurant is equal, and even superior to, any restaurant in Tooting. Very reasonable, you can take your own wine. Highly recommended

Nice little restuarant that's very different from the standard Indian especially as it's South Indian cuisine. VERY obliging staff, will get you whatever you want and the owner can't do enough for you.

Food is quite good - you are given a range of hotness - always opt for the hottest if you ask me ;-)

Lovely place and even my wife loved the food when she's not really that keen on spicy food. Will definitely go there again!

This little gem is ideal for a meal on a budget and for close friends - decor is newly done, however not to everyone's taste, but it doesn't matter when the food is this good.

Sadya is a South Indian restaurant in Balham specialising in food from the state of Kerala. Very different from Northern Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi food. Food is delicious and service charming if a bit erratic. I recommend it however if you want fresh tasty South Indian food at very reasonable prices. Currently a secret in Balham but deserves more attention.

I visited Sadya for the first time last Wednesday. What an amazing restaurant! My neighbors are Indian, and they cook Indian food for me often, but this food surpasses anything I have ever tasted before. It has a unique taste, and is not too heavy. The service was great; the people were very friendly. The prices were reasonable low, especially when considering the great food and service I received. I highly recommend this restaurant to those searching for new places to eat.

The food at Sadya is fantastic, there is so much to choose from and something a bit different from the bog standard curry!

Had some of the best Indian food I've eaten in ages at this place. The menu is varied, with loads of choice of fish, chicken and lamb mains with unusual sauces, and not a tikka masala in site. Try the mango side dish - really unusual and tasty.
At £4-£5 for most mains, it's also an absolute bargain - especially when you consider that at many upmarket/regional-Indian restaurants in London, you'll pay at least twice that for food which is not always as good as this.

Seriously good Kerela cuisine - its just a damn shame that they are tucked out the way on Bedford Hill - they are too quiet - I hope they survive as the food is exceptional and excellent value - 10/10 if you live in Balham it is your DUTY to patronise this place as it must survive.

We have been to this restaurant several times since it opened and have always found it to have great, original, authentic food at very cheap prices and friendly and attentive service. We are not usually Indian cuisine fans, but this definitely does it for us.
A couple of weeks ago they had a special Keralan food week which was amazing and at £12 for the 3 course (with several main courses) extravangaza was unbelievable value!
You must go (and no we are not friends or relations of the owners!)

Plenty of original dishes, we have tried most things on the menu now and have not been dissapointed once. All dishes are generous in size, beautifully spiced, and prepared using fresh ingredients.
Indian food doesn't come much better in my opinion. Having eaten in both Chutney Mary's and Bombay Bicycle Club at the top-end of the market, Sadya food (although not the venue itself), is a good match and it's only a fraction of the price.

Fantastic food - different, imaginative, and inexpensive. The ingredients seem very high quality Great wines on the list too, which they will deliver to your house with your takeaway - what great service! And I've never had a takeaway dish delivered in a banana leaf! Highly recommended.

Went last Sunday and was very impressed indeed. It is a refreshing change from the often downmarket atmosphere of many Indian restaurants, but the highly attentive service, light and tasteful decor and interesting/appealing menu made this a great meal. The prices were excellent and I echo some of the other comments about the generous portion sizes.
This is a restaurant and concept that have really made an effort.

This place is fabulous. I've only been once so far having moved to the area recently, and I'm definitely going back. The food was wonderful with lots of different dishes to try that you don't normally see on an Indian menu. The staff were lovely and the bill was a good surprise too...excellent value. And big portions too!
